Corporate Social Responsibility

Corporate Social Responsibility can be defined as a responsibility among firms to meet the needs of their stakeholders and a responsibility among stakeholders to hold firms accountable for their actions. Apple is known for being a company who generally self-aware company with a CSR score of 59, this includes a 66 in environment and a 52 in community. Some efforts at the company level to improve Apple’s CSR rating include the building of a new campus called Apple Park which will be powered by 100 percent renewable energy.
Apple also initiated the Apple’s Supplier Clean Energy Program in 2015. This program aims to reduce the carbon footprint of manufacturers, they plan on doing this by helping them switch over to clean energy (Apple Supplier Clean energy Program, 2017). I find these efforts to be a step in the right direction. With global warming I think companies such as Apple need to start leading the rest of the world in the direction of clean and renewable energy. Millions of people use Apple products every day, so they have some influence when it comes to persuading the public to support clean energy.
One of the most recent legal issues that Apple has faced would be the battery scandal. Apple was accused of purposefully slowing the batteries of older model IPhones whenever the new models would come out. There was a major public outcry when this happened and it even made national news. Apple responded to this by issuing a public apology and offered replacement batteries at Apple stores for a low price. One of the major environmental projects Apple is currently working on is of course their new Campus Apple Park. Aa mentioned before, the Silicon Valley campus is powered by 100 percent clean and renewable energy.
